What Can I Expect After Getting All-on-4 Dental Implants?

All-on-4 dental implants are an excellent option for people who want to quickly replace an entire row of missing teeth. Instead of using one implant for each missing tooth, All-on-4 uses – you guessed it – just four strategically placed implants to securely anchor a denture. This process is less invasive than getting standard dental implants, so the healing time is typically shorter. However, All-on-4 implants still do require a surgical procedure. Here’s what you can expect during the All-on-4 recovery process.

Will I Need to Take Time Off from Work?

You should consider taking a day or two off work after getting All-on-4 dental implants. This is especially true if your job involves strenuous physical labor. It’s important to rest during the early phase of recovery to help ensure your jawbone and gum tissue begin to heal. Avoid exercising or any other intense physical activity until your dentist advises otherwise.

Will There Be Swelling and Bruising?

You may experience some swelling and bruising immediately after implant surgery. However, this is completely normal. Swelling or discomfort can be managed by taking over-the-counter or prescription pain medication, as instructed by your dentist. You can also apply icepacks to the sides of your face to reduce swelling – 15 minutes on, then 15 minutes off.

What Can I Eat After All-on-4 Surgery?

You will need to stick to a soft-food diet for around three months after getting All-on-4 dental implants. The temporary denture you will wear while your implants heal is not designed for chewing hard foods. Avoid crunchy snacks like pretzels, crackers, or chips. In addition, avoid drinking through a straw, as the suction can dislodge protective blood clots that form near the implant sites.

Here are some soft foods that are safe to eat during All-on-4 recovery:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Applesauce
  • Soft and cooked vegetables
  • Canned fruit
  • Cold soups
  • Oatmeal
  • Protein shakes
  • Ice Cream

Should I Brush My Teeth After Implant Surgery?

Practicing excellent oral hygiene is important to prevent infections and help your implants heal. On the first day after implant surgery, avoid rinsing your mouth with water. Your dentist may recommend a medicated rinse instead. After the first day, you can rinse your mouth with a DIY saltwater solution up to three times a day. You should continue to brush your teeth, but gently and only with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Finally, if you are a regular smoker, try to refrain from indulging in the habit for as long as possible. Tobacco use can interfere with and delay the healing process.

When Should I Visit My Dentist Next?

Your dentist will schedule several follow-up appointments in the weeks and months after implant surgery. These visits give your dentist a chance to monitor the progress of your recovery. Your dentist may also share additional aftercare recommendations during these checkups.

If you are considering All-on-4 implants and have more questions about the recovery process, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist!
